Romanticism focuses on the mystery and beauty of nature, which is clearly portrayed in "The Birthmark". This is evident in the way that Aylmer is astounded by the birthmark on Georgiana's face. Throughout the story, Aylmer is obsessed with remonving the birthmark, and is baffled by it. He even explains how "[he has]spent much thought upon the subject" of removing the birthmark. Since the mystery of the natural birthmark perplexes him so much, it is safe to say that "The Birthmark" portrays elements of Romanticism.

This story contains the romantic idea of focus on beauty and the mystery of nature. Alymer's shallowness causes him to focus on how he can improve natures beauty. The story also shows the romantic idea of focusing on inner perceptions. Alymer chooses to overlook what makes georgiana a good person because of her abnormality.

The mystery of nature and the focus on beauty are clear in this story because the whole plot is based on Georgiana's beauty. The mystery of nature comes into play when Alymer is confused as to why Georgiana was created nearly perfect, but not totally. This story is also an example of psychological literature because it focuses on Alymer's perceptions on life and beauty. How he thinks and why he thinks the things he does. The story also emphasizes on Alymer's intuition and inner perceptions because the whole process of removing Georgiana's birth mark all strives from his perception of beauty, no flaws. For example the following passage shows his strong opinion of Georgiana's beauty. "No, dearest Georgiana, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hisitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection.'"

In this story the elements on romanticism are seen in beauty, when Georgiana has a birthmark on her face and her husband is focuses his relationship with her on it. Also nature is seen in the story when Alymer is confused to why Georgiana is made perfectly except for the birthmark on her face.
