This section starts off with Mepho showing Faust his arts while they while away the time. Mephisto conjures some spirits and they start chanting. They talk about lifiting "the dull mantle"(78) so he can see "the stars shine through/sun will be seen."(79) The spirits lull him to sleep, following Mephisto's plan. He then tells a rat to chew part of the pentagram off so he can escape from Faust's house. "The master of the rats and mice/ of flies and frogs, and bugs and lice,/ Bids you come forth and fearless gnaw/ the sacred sybol at the door." (81)
Faust then awakes and thinks that the memory of Mephisto is but a dream and the only real thing was the poodle. The scene then switches to Faust alone in his study and Mephisto is knocking on the door. He needs three requests to come into the study. "I wait a third request"(82) Mephisto arrives dressed in rich attire, and tells Faust to do the same and "With freedom such as gods may give/ Discover what it means to live"(82)Then Faust has a speech on how he is not content with his life, and Mephisto replies, "Yet death's no welcome stranger at the gate."(83)Mephisto also knows that Faust wanted to kill himself. Mephisto is not "Omniscient? No, not I, but well informed." (83)
