This novel is by far filled with some very crazy people. I think that the craziest person, though is Jordan Baker. She is just so eager to party it up and spread rumors and gossip. For example, she was so excited to tell the story of Daisy and Gatsby. And earlier on, in the first group of chapters that we had to read, she was telling everyone at dinner all about the marvelous parties at Mr. Gatsby's. Also, when nick went to one of the parties at his neightbor's house, she was there, amidst all the other party-goers, and everyone was talking to her, and she to everyone else. Jordan just seems to be the character that is most involved with this rich, lavish party scene that the book is so revolved around.

I think that, for a few different reasons, Gatsby is probably the craziest character so far. He just has so many different dynamics and he's such an eccentric character. For one thing, he lies about his past saying that he was an heir to a load of money, was educated at oxford, said that he traveled europe and lived "like a rajah" (which i had to look up: rajah means a king or prince in india, (like the tiger in aladdin was sort of like an arabian prince, and his name was rajah)) anyway, so he said he "lived like a rajah" and collected jewels, hunted, painted, and has basically lived the kind of life that should be talked about on VH1's "The Fabulous Life Of...". But the whole time he was saying this, nick was trying to keep from laughing and making faces because he knew he was lying. He said, "with this doubt, his whole statement fell to pieces, and i wondered if there wasn't something a little sinister about him, after all" (65).

another reason why Gatsby is crazy is that he throws all these parties but hardly has any friends, and he's excessively obsessed with wealth and money. Thats even made clear on the page i just talked about (page 65). He uses wealth as a thing to impress, saying that he was heir to a ton of money and he was able to afford all these extravagant things, like traveling to europe and collecting jewels- "chiefly rubies" -and while, its true, he does have quite a bit of money, he uses his money to impress.

anyway those are my thoughts.

I disagree. I believe that in order to classfy a person as 'crazy' phsyical emotions and characteristics need to be taken into account. To me, Jordan is just a normal woman who is constantly in the mood to gossip and talk to people at parties.

'Crazy' is classified as..how about hitting a woman in the face at a dinner party? Quite clearly Tom Buchanan can be charactierized as 'crazy'. did not get to finish

I'm going to say Daisy. She's a mess, and I don't think it;s all her fault, but she's clearly a woman on theverge of a nervous breakdown. She says to Gatsby "I'd like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around"(94).

She's lost it.

I think the craziest person in the novel so far is Gatsby friend/ business partner: Mr. Wolfsheim. Through the bits of information we have been exposed to he just seems to give off a "sketchy" quality. For example, while having lunch with Nick and Gatsby he discusses his preference of a different restaurant since it reminds him of all his dead friends. Perhaps this is an innocent comment, but it has a morbid feeling just the same. Additionally, he random inquires if Nick wishing to do business a vague and suspcious comment. Finally, possibly the strangest comment he makes is regarding the buttons on his sleeve which he claims to be made of "human molars." He is a strange character and I hope more about his background comes through in the story.

Although there are many characters who could be classified as crazy, I believe that Gatsby is the craziest. He is such a mysterious character, because he lies about his past. You cannot tell what is the truth and what is a lie. Gatsby is unknown to Nick untill he goes to his party, and they are suddenly best friends. Gatsby's parties are filled with people he isn't even friends with, and he says that he loves to be around interesting people. People have such different thoughts of who he is, and still the people closest to him do not know who he truly is.

I believe that Tom Buchanan is the craziest character in the novel so far. He lives a very "sletchy" lifestyle and tries to spread it to others. I find it strange that he has made it known to his wife, Daisy, that he has a mistress in NYC. He seems to be a little off and crazy. His mistress is also pretty crazy, and it all seems like a very offkilter relationship.

If you look at it from the point of view of others, i think that gatsby is definitely the craziest character. His life, to me, does not mean anything. he has spent it thinking about something, that in my opinion, isn't even real. It doesn't seem like their relationship was amazing to start with, and spending five years devoting all of his thoughts to it seems to have defeated him. I think even now he is just holding desperately onto the hope that she will love him and they can be happy. I think part of the reason why he cant tell about his life is because it means nothing to him. The short time that he was with daisy make up the only true and unchanging part of his life story that he can tell.

The craziest charcter in the Great Gatsby is Wolfhsuiem. From the breif introducuiton to him, he has got to be mnetally deranged, HE HAS A MAN'S MOLARS ON HIS CUFF. If you don't think that is crazy then you are crazy. Everyone else seems either really dumb or to rich, Wolfshiem is out of his mind.

I agree with Carolyn and think that Wolfshiem is the craziest. The fact that he wears the "finest specimens of human molars" as cuff buttons is ridiculous. No one in their right mind would use actual human teeth as an article of clothing. Also the way he left his lunch with Nick and Gatsby so quickly was very strange. He left as soon as the subject of trust was brought up. This leads me to believe that he has a very shady background and I agree with Carolyn and hope that more about his past will unfold as the novel goes on.

I think the craziest is drunk Tom Buchanan. He cares so much about his reputation and pride that he punches Myrtle in the face after disobeying him by chanting Daisy's name.

Cameron makes an excellent point. Gatsby really is a delusional sad sack of a man living an empty life filled with meaningless things and hopeless dreams.

I would have to agree with those who said that Gatsby is the craziest character. The fact that he's been searching for Daisy for what 5 years now is not romantic, it's creepy and something that is clearly abnormal. How he knew the exact date of their anniversary ("5 years this November") and his whole life for the past half decade has been to search for his lost love, so he hosts parties hoping she will come and he can see her again..? Freakkkk.
Aside from that, just his personality overall is weird, such as his mood change from meeting Daisy to talking to her again. His actions and words and aura is just crazy.

Mr. Jay Gatsby is by far the craziest character in the novel. Gatsby's crazyness is not necessarily a bad thing either. He is just crazy in love with Daisy and focuses his whole life around getting a second chance at love with her. Some might consider this romantic, which it is, but it is also kind of crazy. Also, Gatsby is crazy is the sense of lending his house as the site of wild parties for tons of strangers. All of this behavoir is a little out of the ordinary.

First of all, I have to say that I love Will's comment hahaha "if you dont think he's crazy then youre crazy"..nicely done

Anyway, I would have to agree that Wolfshiem is the craziest of them all. I think that Gatsby is just a rich man who is trying to make himself look better than he actually is (with reference to Shay's comment about the "rajah") because havent we all done that at some point or another? dramaticize ourselves to make us likable? And I feel that Tom is just a jerk and has no consideration for other peoples feelings. I just think that those are their characteristics but neither of the quailfy as "crazy".

I think that Mr. Wolfshiem is crazy because one can connect his "sketchy" and "creepy" attitude to be something dangerous and completely out there. As I had said before from prompt #3 (I think) Wolfshiem reminds me of a character from the Sopranos and any man who has a mans molars on their cuffs is truely insane.

Tom is pretty crazy, actually getting up the nerve to punch a girl in the face! when i read that i was in shock. But besides tom this whole book is pretty crazy. All the character like jordan who loves to drink and is alittle snobby, also a liar.Gatsby who throws these huge parties. Daisy who the heck knows whats going to happen to her soon. There all a little out there in my mind.

Tom, because he has this alterred view of the world. Because of his past accomplishments in football he sees himself as better than everyone else in a way. He's also larger and more stronger than the average man. I think this really comes out when he punches Myrtle in the face and breaks her nose, because she wouldn't obey him. So that's why I think Tom is the craziest one, because of his anger problems and seemingly false beliefs about his superiority.
