I found the truth about Gatsby's past very interesting. Before we learned all of this we just saw him as this mysterious man that people just made up stories about, but after this we know more about the real James Gatz and it really huminizes him. The thing that i found most interesting was how he was not born into wealth, and how Cody left all that money to Gatsby but he couldnt take it so he was driven to become a wealthy man.

It made Gatsby appear to be a real man, with a real life. Before, he was just this man, eveloped in the shadows, we knew very little about. But now, you can feel for him, and he has feelings that are easy to identify with for most people. Instead of thinking of him with disdain because he has more money than he knows what to do with, and just throws it all away on these extravagant parties every weekend, you start to feel bad for him because he has real feelings, and a real longing for someone who probably will never be his.

I was happy that F. Scott Fitzgerald allowed us to know the truth about Gatsby's past because it was frustrating reading all these rumors and never knowing what really happened. Gatsby is truly a rags to riches strory, when a man who starts with nothing, rises up as a wealthy socialite. Once we found out his past, all his hiding and emotions seemed more realistic, instead of just an act he was putting on. I agree with Matt and Alyssa in that knowing about his past, makes him seem more human.

The fact that it only took Gatsby three years to earn the money to buy his mansion makes it pretty clear that he did something illegal to get it.

I also find it interesting that Gatsby was a janitor (could thee be anything more the polar opposite of who he is now? Also, he clearly learned a lot about the rich life from Dan Cody, but I'm curious why Fitzgerald had Gatsby NOT end up inheriting the $25,000 he was left.

I also agree with Katie, I think that it has been very frustrating to be reading abou tall of these rumors about Gatsby. The whole time I was wondering, is this really true. At first he seems pretty fake, but as he goes on it shows that he is real and has worked up to where he is now with all of his wealth.

I found it interesting that Gatsby lied about how he came into all his fortune. He says he inherited all his money, but then later retells on how he made money in his different business'. It shows that he is not lying just for people to like him, he is lying for another reason.

I also found it interesting that Gatsby and Daisy had some type of relationship a long time ago, and hadn't talked or heard eachother's names in such a long time. Gatsby says how he bought his house to be close enough to Daisy, but at the same time be far away. I felt this showed how Gatsby was a real person, with real feelings.

Before we just saw Gatsby as someone who was obviously very wealthy by the big house he has and the big parties he would basically hold to the open. We didnt know much about him, he was a mystery character. In chapter six you learn alot more about him and his past. I also agree with katie and jenna you hear all these nasty rumors about him but in the end its nice to know hes a real person, also though ms. coppens has a good point about how fast he earned his money, makes it interestingand a mystery.

I'm not sure that what Gatsby told Nick is entirely true. I have a hard time trusting him just because he does have so many things said about him. I realize that it may not be his fault he's the center of the gossip, but its difficult to ignore the rumors. I'm still skeptical of Gatsby even though he had the tokens that proved he was in the war and went to Oxford. He just seems like a shady character and i'm having trouble knowing what to believe

I thought that the truth about Gatsby's past was the most interesting part of the story thus far. The period of time he spent with Dan Cody and the influence they had on each other was intriguing to me, almost as much as the subject of Dan Cody's death. I was hoping for a little more insight into Ella Kaye and her role in dan's life and death. I also am intrigued to find out exactly how Gatsby did come into so much money.

The truth behind Gatsby's past only led me to want to know more. There are so many details missing, such as his line of work and some of the circumstances surrounding his involvement with Daisy, which I want to know more about. Gatsby's fascinating background only makes his character more and more interesting to learn about and get to know.

I agree with Matt Campbell about how I feel about Gatsby's past. I learned that he wasn't born into a wealthy family or anything, but it makes me want to know how he's accumulated all his wealth in such a short time. I'm curious to find this out later in the book, but for now I think the truths we learn about his past are interesting and does make him more human in a way.

i find it interesting that gatsby made out his past to be the average fortunate kid inherits rich families money type of story. it was clear that gatsby had been lying about his oxford education and such because of the way he sped over the phrase " educated at oxford." i thought it was interesting how he came form a simple, poorer family and now has grown into this elaborately wealthy man, who spends constantly trying to fill whatever empty void he has the need to fill. i think because everyone else is so rich, that he almost feels ashamed of his poorer past and different name, that he would not even think about telling people the truth about his upbringing and how he came into his wealth. everyone is pretty stuck up, and as seen by the way they gossip, gatsby would not want that unnecessary attention, nor anymore ppl judging him more than they already had been.
