Gatsby Prompt #1

What do you think of the novel so far?

I think that the novel started out slowly with long introductions to each character, but in the past section things really started to pick up. It was interesting to learn that Gatsby and Daisy had a past and that Gatsby was still obsessed with Daisy. In fact, he had moved to West Egg just to be near to her. I think with this new piece of the puzzle, the novel will begin to move in a different direction, focusing on what Nick observes between Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom.

I like how the story is told from Nick's perspective because he has very keen insight into the character of others. At one point, he said, "There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired." (79) All the characters that he has been observing fit into this statement well, and this quote wrapped up all the observations into one statement. I am looking forward to learing more about the mysterious Gatsby!

So far i have really liked the Great Gatsby. In society the uber wealthy are always viewed as having it easy, but this book shows that is not true. The book really shows how money is not everything and how you can have all the money in the world, and you will still have problems like the guy living in the gutter. Another fasinating thing is how realistic the story is and how things like this could have really happened not too long ago.

I like this section because it's interesting to see how the drama is unfolding. Daisy is clearly excited to be reunited with Gatsby who has loved her and worked only for her love for years. It's very romantic in that sense, but also edging on psychotic, I think. Maybe that's a little harsh. It just seems that Gatsby has glorified Daisy into something inhuman that will be impossible for her to live up to. I think in real life a lot of people do that. They fall in love not with the real person with faults, imprefections, and their own fears, but with a person they have created, built up in their minds to embody what is missing in their own lives.

I really like this story because it keeps you interested at all times. There is always something happening and it is fun to read about the parties that they used to have.

I really like this book. Usually, I don't really enjoy the books that we have to read for school, but this one is just so interesting and exciting. I get overwhelmed evertime I realize that I have to read sixty or so pages, but the reading gges by so fast, and I really enjoy it.

It is getting really interesting now that all the characters seem to be tying into one another, especially with the Daisy/Gatsby back story. And it's all so interesting because it is told from the perspective of an outsider, yet that outsider is part of the story.

The only thing that I wish was that a little more would happen in Nick's life. It seems that everything happens around him, but not to him. I still really like it though.

So far, so good! This is my favorite book that we have read so far. The characters' dynamic personalities and short scentence structure make this an exciting read. I think that the comparison of lifestyles and classes in this story is very intriguing. I am interrested to see if Daisy and Gatsby end up together and I am wondering what will happen between Myrtle and Tom. I hope that Daisy gets up the nerve to talk to Tom about his rudeness and his mistress.

Although Nick is a very effective narrator, I am interested to hear more about his story. I would like to figure out where he fits in in the whole scheme of things. I have high hopes for the end of this story and I am looking forward to determining the theme of the story.

The first chapter or so of the novel did get out to a slow start, which I had expected based on what we had been told in class. However, as the plot has progressed, it has taken on a new feel. All the characters seem to be connected to eachother in one way or another. It makes me wonder if more of their history's will surface as the book continues.

We are learning more and more about Gatsby's past, however I still feel that he is a mysterious, yet interesting, character. This can of course be related to the common topic of his love for Daisy, but I also find that his true character and personality has been highlighted throughout his interractions with Nick. "I had talked with him perhaps six times in the past month and found, to my disappointment, that he had little to say. So my first impression, that he was a person of some undefined consequence, had gradually faded and he had become simply the proprietor of an elaborate road-house next door.(64) Nick was thinking this about Gatsby at the beginning of chapter 4, expressing that he felt that Gatsby had secrets, but is hiding them. Is Gatsby more that just an owner of a mansion, still obsessed with a past lover?

I enjoy the novel very much, especially compared to other things we have read this year. The story is a web of lies and interactions that may at first seem confusing and sporadic, but they all actually do connect. It's so interesting how many different affairs and secret loves are going on! The novel is easy to read and there aren't too many confusing scenes. It's fasciinating how important money and wealth are to these characters; they feel like they don't live a successful life if they don't have an immense amount of luxuries. I just wonder if someone were to write a book about our time period if it would be the same thing...

So far, I think this novel is very interesting, expecially during chapter 4 when you find out that Daisy and Gatsby had a relationship history. It is intersting because all the characters are interconnected with each other...Daisy and Gatsby...Tom and Daisy...Jordan, who knows gatsby, daisy and tom. Then there is Nick, who seems to appear at every important occasion and just be a part of everyones life. He also comments on each character and which is how we, the readers, ultimatley learn about the different characters.

I like Nicks observation when Gatsby and Daisy are together. He says "No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a men will store up in his ghostly heart" (96). Even though Gatsby was embarassed before he was reunited with Daisy, he still let his emotions go because he couldn't store them up in his heart...because as Nick says, a man can't do that.

I am excited to find out what will ultimately happen between Gatsby and Daisy, and what role Nick will have throughout the rest of the book.

I really like the novel because in the first few chapters I was able to get a good sense of who everyone was. The book really described each character, so I know how everyone is related to eachother as I read on. I can put some of the pieces together while I'm reading.

I also like most of the characters, especially Gatsby. He is a really dynamic character that has does so many interesting things, and is so unique from everyone else. I like how he does not care what anyone thinks, and nobody actually knows who he really is.

The story definately started out extremely slow and it really made me not want to read this story, but as the story continued and Gatsby's character developed, the story definately picked up, props to Mr. Gatsby's presense. I think everyone becomes intrigued by Gatsby and his mysterious presense and odd ways that makes us want to read the rest of the story.

So far, I really like this novel. Granted in the beginning it was a slow, boring read, but as the story and plot line began to develop, I felt intrigued by the lives of the main characters. I agree with Katie in saying that this is definately one of the better books we've been assigned to read this year. I like all of the different character connections and how there lives seem to intertwine with eachother.
I also enjoy how the narrator of the book is Nick. He is an outsider looking in almost. He does not have the connections with the others as everyone else seems to add but i feel this adds to the story because you get another perspective. Also, I find his naivite to be quite humorous and adds a light feel to the story.

"The Great Gatsby" is a great book because of the man the title refers to. Gatsby is such a cool character to read about and you are continually interested to find out more about him. Gatsby seems like such a suave, cool character who has total control of his life, but is completely humbled when it comes to his crush on Daisy. There are certain people in books, like Holden Caulfield, who rise above the status of your basic character and become unforgettable, and Gatsby is one of these people.

I like the story we are reading. its alot different than some of the other stories we have read but it's a good change. All the character's are really interesting and they all have a sense of humor that makes it funny. There is so many love affairs its crazy! it really keeps you on your toes though to see what could happen next. But seeing how careless this time period was about partying and driving drunk it kind of is teaching a lesson to me

i really dont like the great gatsby. The characters are so obnoxious! I cant deal with their awful attitudes towards anything but money. To tell you the truth, the great gatsby reminds me of gossip girl, only.. set earlier.

I think the novel is ok, I like the revelations brought forth on Gatsby. From his mysterious pass, to his lies and his relationship with Daisy. I think he's a mysterious character, and I want to find out more about him. I'm also curious about what's going to happen between Daisy and Gatsby and what Tom will do. Tom already dislikes Gatsby and I want to know if Tom will eventually confront Gatsby in some way.

P.S. "It's Freakin Awesome!"

I like this novel much more than other books we've read just because it is more relatable to today and highschool and the gossip and it just seems like East and West Egg are an adult only high school, with everyone knowing everyone and rumors being spread. It's easier to read than the Scarlet Letter or Song of Myself. It doesnt leave much to interpret, which in a sense I dont like, because i'm used to searching for symbols and i just cannot find any in The Great Gatsby, at least none that serve a great importance.

I just do not like how slowly the novel is progressing. We're halfway through the novel and a conflict is just sort of, kind of, emerging. To make this the ultimate highschool parallel, drama needs to create conflict between everyone.

So far I have really enjoyed reading this novel. I have found all aspects to be very interesting, especially the fact that many characters' pasts intertwine. First, Gatsby and Nick were both in the war. Second, Gatsby had a past with Daisy. It is a cool story line because of the intertwining stories and relationships. It doesn't seem like the most realistic storyline, but it is interesting to keep reading and unveiling more about each character.
It is pretty interesting that Gatsby's past is kept a secret until the middle of the book.
I definitely like it so far.

So far I am completely fascinated by everything I've read in this novel. The insight it provides into the wealthy class in the 1920s is incredibly interesting. All of the love triangles, the parties, the drinking... it's very intriguing because most of the events in this story transcend any one time period. You could take all of these characters, modernize them, and write a book with the same storyline set in 2007, and it would still be relevant. I think that's what made this novel such a classic. Jay Gatsby is a character that will never cease to captivate me. When you first meet him in the book, he's completely in his element-- throwing a party at his house, surrounded by people-- he's calm, cool, collected, and charming. Then, not even a few chapters later, he's reduced to somewhat of a mess, just because he's seeing a girl from his past. It's a book I'm actually looking forward to finishing over Thanksgiving break--shocking.

But forreal though, the book is pretty interesting. It started out slowly at the beginning, giving a foundation for the characters and the story.
