Respond to this quote or a part of it:
"Through all he said, even through his appalling sentimentality, I was reminded of something--an elusive rhythm, a fragment of lost words, that I had heard somewhere a long time ago. For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man's, as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air. But they made no sound, and what I had almost remembered was uncommunicable forever" (111).

Nick states that there was "an elusive rtythm, a fragment of lost words, that i had heard somewhere a long time ago." I believe that Nick thinks that Gatsby is lying about how him and Daisey met. It reminded Nick about another story Gatsby was telling where it did not seem like he was telling the truth.

I agree with Steve that Nick thinks Gatsby is a liar. It seems like Gatsby was struggling to say whatever he was trying to say, hinting that he might be lying. Nick seems to be curious, wondering if Gatsby's "elusive rtythm" is the actual truth or a completely made up lie. Also, I think that Nick has been greatly swayed by the public opinions about Gatsby. It is now hard for Nick to believe Gatsby based on all of the rediculous stories he has heard about him.

I agree with Joe that Gatsby seems to be falsifying his history to preserve his image. He changes his story often, like saying he inherited his fortune, but later says he worked for it because the original fortune was lost in a fire. It is possible he is either doing something illegal (hence the mysterious nature) or something for the government (always being on the telephone).
"a fragment of lost words, that i had heard somewhere a long time ago." could foreshadow that Nick had some prior connection to Gatsby but does not remember it.

I think Nick has a feeling that Gatsby isn't telling the truth about somethings and he's trying to give off an image of himself. I think Nick recognizes it and remembers it from previous conversations with Gatsby, but cannot recall it perfectly and doesn't want to criticize Gatsby about it either.

i agree with pretty much all of the previously stated comments. i believe that gatsby is lying about his past, and i feel as though he is hiding secrets, or important chunks of his life stories from everyone. i've notice a pattern that gatsby tends to twist the truth, or lie about a lot of things. i feel as though he doesn't trust all too many people, and isn't quite comfortable enough with his own past in order to fully reveal it to someone else.
