As Holden reveals parts of his past, he introduces several characters that greatly impact his life. first off, Allie, Holden's little brother, died of luchemia at an early age and left Holden with a baseball mitt with several poems written inside. The second, is his little sister, Phoebe. Holden constantly considers calling her up and having a chat with her about his situation. But quickly forgets his decisions because he is afraid that his parents would pick up instead of her. Holden, though bitter, deeply understands the meaning of a pure relationship between (little) siblings. Glenn B.
Holden knows many kids, which are the only things that make him happy. Much of his younger siblings are such kids. Phoebe, his sister, is a great kid. Holden wants to see her as he is in New York, or even call her. Another sibling, Allie, who is Holden's brother, also was a great person. Allie greatly affected Holden's life when he passed away. Holden became greatly upset and troubled by this because he lost he beloved brother. Jonathon s.
When Holden walks through the park looking for Phoebe he begins to talk with a girl her age. She was trying to tighten her skates and Holden helped her. After the girl had thanked him, "She was a very nice, polite little kid. God, i love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. Most kids are. They really are. " (119)Holden appreciates the kindness in children, and returns the favor.
Holden enjoys watching little kids and seeing what they have to say, personally I think it is because he misses his youth and true innocences. Even just the little things makes him so happy, "And he kept on walking next to the curb and singing 'If a body catch a body coming through the rye.' He had a pretty little voice, too. He was just singing for the hell of it, you could tell....it made me feel not so depressed anymore." (115)
Throughout the story Holden introduces and talks about kids who have affected his life and who he cares about deeply. The first he introduces was when he was writing a description paper for Stradlater and he brought out his brother's baseball glove that had poems written all over it. Allie, Holden's brother, died of leukimia a few years ago so Holden misses him dearly. The second child Holden brings up is his sister Pheobe. Pheobe, as Holden describes, is a smart and beautiful girl. He debates about calling her up but never actually follows through. Just thinking of calling Pheobe satisfys his lonileness until he thinks of her or Allie again.
Holden has many experiences with kids in this story that make him happy and guide him on his way in the story.
An example would be when he is looking for his sister in the park and finds her friend who is really nice and polite toward him (making him really happy) after he tied her laces and guides him toward the muesem where she thinks his sister is and the old happy memories of the times he had there.
Holden talks about a few kids that mean something to him. The first is Allie, his little brother that died. He really cared about him and wishes that Allie was still around. When he thinks about his brother he misses him but remembers all the good time he had. Jen K
at the natural history museum Holden talks about his little brother Allie, how died three years ago. he also wants to meet his sisster phoebe at the park, but did not see her.
Through out the novel, Holden reveals how great his sister and brother is. he shows that he loves children by the way that he describes Allie, which of whom holden is still upset about his death. Phoebe, his little sister, is one of his favorite people and he loves them very much.
holden likes hanging out with kids because he didnt really have a good childhood. "he cept on walking next to the curb singing" (115) this is because he is trying to go back and enjoy life as a kid that he was not able to do ariginaly.
When holden is walking to get his sister a record, he sees a young chld singing a song, which makes him feel happy. "It made me feel better. It made me feel not so depressed anymore."(115)
Holden constantly talks about how is little brother Allie made him happy. it seems as though this is the only thing in Holdens life that he can hold onto. he becomes very attached to Allies baseball Mitt because it is the last memory that he has with his brother. He also has strong emotion for his younger sister phoebe. They talk about Holdens situation on the phone throughout the book.
We first notice that Holden likes kids when he talks about his little brother Allie that died. "You'd have like him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent....God, he was a nice kid, though."(38). He also gets happy when he thinks about his little sister Phoebe. Just kids in general make him happy...like when he was going to go see if Pheobe was at the park the little kid singing made him feel better. "it made me feel better. It made me feel not so depressed any more."(115). And when he tied the girl's skate in the park..."God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. Most kids are. They really are."(119)
One of the first things is when Holden talks about his dead brother Allie who he used to play with. They used to have lots of fun but when he died he took part of Holden with him, leading to who he is now. He shows how he can be bought out of his depression/unhappiness when he talks to the little girl at the park, trying to find his sister. She confuses the day to be Saturday (as opposed to Sunday) and instead of thinking something mean in his head the book just goes on.
"God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. (119)"
Holden likes the simplicity of kids. Holden acts like a kid sometimes and probably misses his childhood a lot. He misses the innocence of childhood, but sort of feels happy when talking to kids because they remind him of the innocence he had.
One example of when Holden shows that kids are one of the only things that makes him happy is when he describes the Museum of Natural History. He goes on in this passage to describe what it was like to be a kid and how it brought him joy:
I get very happy when I think of it...you'd be two rows of kids and you'd have a partner.
So, now Holden is happy when he sees kids because their happiness reminds him of his childhood when everything was good in his opinion. It makes him happy in his somewhat dark world of sadness and depression.
In chapter 16, when Holden is feeling particularly depressed. He is comforted by the sight of a young boy strolling through the park singing: "If a body catch a body coming through the rye."
which is, I guess where the title comes from? He does'nt actually say the words.
