"After they left, I started getting sorry that i'd only given them ten bucks for their collection." This shows that Holden even though he insint that religous he still donates some money to the nuns. With him doing this it shows that he still cares about helping people.

There are many quotes that reveal Holden as a character on pages 108-113. One quote is said by one of the nuns, "Oh Romeo and Juliet!Lovely! Didn't you just love it? She certainly didn't sound much like a nun"(111). Holden had difficulty talking about an intimate play and that it spoke of intimate details between males and females which he finds hard to articulate due to insecurity.

Well put Caitlin, I agree completely, and also I agree with the person who left no name. He definitly shows guilt for not leaving more money and that is a great sign of his own character.

"I'd enjoyed it even more though, I think, if i hadn't been sort of afraid, the whole time I was talking to them, that they'd all of a suddentry to find out if I was a catholic." (112) When Holden first sees the nuns while eating breakfast he notices their cheap suitcases, and bases his initial opinion on that. However, now he reflects upon how all catholics ask if your catholic. It seems that Holden bases a lot of his thoughts on past events.

"I thought if you were taking a small contribution... I could make a small contribution" (109).
In this quote, Holden wants to give the two nuns some money for charity. It also shows that Holden cares about other people as he decides, and even thought of, giving a contribution to those in need.

"It was sort of embaressing, in a way, to be talking about Romeo & Juliet with her...she was a nun and all" (111). Holden explains throughout this scene that it was uncomfortable to be sitting next to the nuns, talking with them. He mentioned that it was specifically embaressing talking about a "sexy" play, because of the choices nuns make, to be a nun. I think this is an example of the numerous occations where Holden feels like he must be someone else in public, depending on the people he is around. He is very critical of those people and yet cordial at the same time.

"Anyway, these two nuns were sitting next to me, and we sort of struck up a conversation the one right next to me had one of those straw baskets that you see nuns around Christmas time....'I thought if you were taking up a collection....I could make a small contributtion."(109) I thought that this was totally spontanious of Holden because you can see he shells out money for drinks and movies/dates and luxury things but never to random nuns for charity. I think this reveals that he has a good heart but a lost soul when it comes to his own life.

They let me give ten bucks as a contribution. They kept asking me if i could afford it and all."(110)
This shows how even though Holden is running low on money he still wants to a good thing. I think this is bacause subconciously he knows he is unfairly critical of poeple and wants to make up for it. It is a way of justifying who he his.

"I'd enjoyed talking to them a lot, too" (112).
Holden really appreciates small things in life like a conversation with a couple of nuns. he really picks out small details that really matter and stick out to him. He is a caring person for those nuns becuase he knows they have done nothing wrong. The only thing he remarks about them is their appearence. Other than that, Holden is a good person and cares about the minute things in life.

"i Started geting sorry that id only given them ten bucks" this shows that he does care about the nuns and isnt totaly selfish and non careing twords other people.

"I could make a small contribution. You could keep the money for when you do take up a collection."
I think holden is giving, but only for personal reflection in my opinion. he is also hippocritical, decieving, and phony. he really couldn't give a crap about nuns and their funds

"After they left I started getting sorry that I only gave them ten bucks"(113) This quote reveals that Holden actually cares about charity and nuns and stuff.
"They didn't seem to know what the hell to do with the suitcases, so i gave them a hand." This show that Holden is a sensitive caring for others and looking out for them
Chris C.
In Holden's encounter with the two nuns he seems to think that they are rather bad looking and down on their luck, but he also seems to show some goodness in him when he donated ten dollars for the charity that the nuns were running.

Holden wants to give the nuns money even though they refused andhe eventually pursuades them to take ten dollars. "They took it though, finally. The both of them kept thanking me so much it was embarrising."

"It isn't important, I know, but I hate it when somebody has cheap suitcases. It sounds terrible to say itm but I can even get to hate somebody, just looking at them, if they have cheap suitcases with them."
This shows how truly phony and classless that Holden is. He judges someone on the value of their suitcase as if they're not good enough for him. That's even a bit narcissistic.

"All the two of them were eating for breakfast was toast and coffee. That depressed me. I hate it if im eating bacon and eggs or something and somebody else is eating only toast and coffee."110
I think this shows that Holden is a very caring person because he feels bad that he is having a meal and they are eating like birds.
Lauren B.
"I took their checkoff them, but they wouldn't let me pay it. The one with the glasses mde me give it back to her." (112) This quote shows that he does care and can be very nice to people he doesn't even know.
Jen K
"goddamn money, it always ends up making you feel blue as hell" (113)
This quote shows both how Holden feels about money, and his tendency to blame his own problems on other people and things.

"I said I'd enjoy talking to them a lot too. I meant it, too. I'd have enjoyed it even mroe though, I think, if I hadn't been sory of afraid, the whole time I was talking to them, that they'd all of a sudden try to find out if I was a Catholic."(112)
I think that this shows Holden enjoys talking to any kind of person no matter what there thoughts or religion might be. He always says that he doesnt like talkig to phonies but i belive that deep down inside Holden likes the diverse thoughts and opinions of other people, and really jsut enjoys there company.
